I was recently asked to speak to a group of young people and share with them thoughts that would help them navigate finding the purposes of God for their lives. I thank God that He has always brought into my life spiritual fathers & mothers who recognized the calling on me, but sadly, there are some things I had to learn the hard way. It has been said “experience teaches you things you refuse to learn from a mentor.”

Here are some things I wish I could tell my younger self:

1. Stay hungry & teachable.
While I was taught this early on, I’ve tried to keep this at the forefront of my thinking. An early mentor of mine one day sat me down in his office where we were working together and said to me, “David, you are truly called by God, you have the anointing on your life in a powerful way, but if you don’t keep a teachable spirit about you, then you will never achieve the destiny God is calling you to.”

These words have never left my mind in forty-one years. I have found that everything God has for us is attainable if you are hungry enough to believe Him for them, thirsty enough to continuously pursue Him, and teachable enough to be trained by Him. John states in 1 John 2:20 “…you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.” John also staes in verse 27,

“But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”

This doesn’t mean we don’t need teachers, pastors, prophets, or any of the other five-fold ministers in our lives: if that was so, the ministry of Jesus would not have been a preaching, teaching, and healing ministry. John’s emphasis (to me) is that we remain teachable. One of the disappointing traits about prophetic people that has caused many pastors to reject the prophetic ministry is that many of them are not teachable.

If you are going to accomplish anything for Jesus while you are living on this earth, you MUST remain teachable, no matter how old you are!

2. Find your stream and embrace it.
A stream is the calling, anointing and gifting God has placed upon your life.  The calling, anointing and gifting you have is completely unique to you, your personality, and the destiny God wants you to fulfill.

In Ephesians 4:7, Paul states, “But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.”

My last book was titled “Grasping Your Assignment” in which we go into detail how unique our gifting, anointing and assignment is to us. It will not look like anyone else’s on the earth. The stream is also the general company of believers that we will be drawn to and have a desire to fellowship with. I have found in my life, there will be streams that feed you, streams that may encourage you, but there will be one stream God calls you to that will give you your grace. Because it took me so many years for me to understand my identity as a son, I never felt like I fit in anywhere I was. But when Holy Spirit helped me to understand and find my “stream” I was released from that frustration, and I found a group of people in which the grace on my life would be celebrated and not just tolerated.

Find your stream and embrace it!

3. Expect a generational transfer.
This all begins with staying hungry and remaining teachable. Much has already been written about generational gaps and how older ministers and younger ministers can’t stand each other. But I believe God is changing this! This new season we have moved into is bringing with it a generational transfer of blessing that we have never known in our lifetime. Spiritual parents is such a hard concept for American people to understand, but everything about the Kingdom of God is based on family. God does NOT expect every generation to reinvent the wheel.

God is calling spiritual fathers & mothers to reach out and embrace sons & daughters to mentor, instruct and send forth with an impartation that will make Jesus famous again. God has given Revival Now an assignment for this hour to reach, teach, train, and release people into their God given assignments.

Your spiritual father or mother may not have a national platform for you to launch from, but they DO have an anointing on their lives that will unlock your destiny and bring a revelation of Jesus in your life. They have something to deposit in you that just may save you marriage and your ministry, eliminate your frustration, and establish you in the stream of anointing God wants you to walk in the remaining days of your life.
