Several years ago, a young man was releasing a prophetic word to me, and as he ended the word he took the palm of his hand and tapped me on the forehead and said, “David, for these things to come to pass you must change this: you must change your thinking.”
For many years I have studied and ministered on different mindsets that will stop or destroy the move of the Holy Spirit on our lives. But this year I have found two mindsets that have been more sinister in my life than the others. These mindsets will stop or severely hinder our spiritual maturity God is calling us to at this hour.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a mindset is a habitual way of thinking; a stronghold. A mindset is a particular way of thinking which may or may not be truth. Mindsets will also lead to strongholds being developed in our lives.
A stronghold is “a mindset impregnated with hopelessness that causes us to accept as unchangeable situations that we know are contrary to the will of God.” -Ed Silvoso
The first mindset that will severely restrict our spiritual maturity is the poverty mindset. Notice I didn’t say a poverty spirit; I said a mindset. I know we battle evil spirits in heavenly places and I know we have been given spiritual authority over those through the armor of God and the Blood of Jesus. But when you rebuke a spirit and nothing changes, it may not be a spirit after all. It could be a mindset…a thinking pattern that has been develop over time that may not be based on the truth of the Word of God. You cannot “cast out” a mindset; a mindset must be changed with truth.
I don’t have time to list all but here are some characteristics of a poverty mindset:
1.Poverty mindset works hand in hand with and feeds off jealousy, envy, strife.
2.The poverty mindset absolutely hates, despises and is jealous of the favor God gives you with people who want to bless you.
3.People who have been raised in a poverty mindset tend to resist a spirit of excellence and call it pride. When you grow up in poverty you can tend to simply accept laziness & entitlement as normal. There is a huge difference in the spontaneity of the yielding to the Spirit….and being lazy. And people don’t owe us anything but love.
4.The poverty mindset will pressure you to apologize for the blessings of God on your life.
5.The poverty mindset will try to make you feel guilty when God blesses you.
Never allow someone else’s jealousy or misunderstanding or your blessing drag you in to their offense!
6.The poverty mindset will cause you to horde what God wants you to sow. A poverty mindset also causes you to horde things that you will never use again.
7.The poverty mindset doesn’t believe you should expect a harvest from sowing
8.A poverty mindset is deeply rooted in unbelief: it cannot grasp that what you sow you will reap: and if you let go of what is in your hand, God will let go of what is in His hand.
9.Poverty mindset makes you think God made you this way…(sickly…beat down…addicted) and you’ll always be this way. It refuses to allow you to believe that God really does love you…He wants the best for you…He wants to bless you…deliver you…empower you…use you and make your life whole again.
10.A poverty mindset may cause you to die before your time. It will keep you from taking care of your body, living haphazardly and being careless with your health AND your spiritual walk with God.
Again: a stronghold is a mindset impregnated with hopelessness that causes us to accept as unchangeable situations that we know are contrary to the will of God. Thank God for the power of the Blood of Jesus that sets us free from the poverty mindset!
As we approach the end of 2017, many take time to look at sowing special offerings to ministries before the end of the accounting and calendar year. We are always thankful for the financial support our partners give us throughout the year. Thank you for remembering Revival Now Interantional in your end of the year giving.
