Leadership expert Dr. John Maxwell says, “Leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Each week I work with leaders young and old, who are looking for a golden nugget; or better, a golden key that will unlock the destiny and dreams God has put into their hearts to accomplish for Him. If you are a leader and you don’t have a dream or a desire to improve and enlarge your ministry or your leadership influence, I question if you are called by God to lead His people.

The Bible is filled with ordinary people who met our extra-ordinary God and He called them and empowered them to accomplish great things for God. If it is God’s will that our leadership influence and ministries grow (and I believe it is), the question then comes, what do I do to position myself to either be “seen” or “found’ in order to move up in my leadership influence? When promotion becomes the only thought you contemplate day in and day out, you are setting yourself up for deception, or to become a manipulator in order to get what you are striving for.

Psalms 75:6, 7 6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.  7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

God is the one Who promotes. God is the one Who called you. He is the one who will make a place for you in His Kingdom.

In pondering these constant questions, I recommend you think about these three thoughts:

1.Is the position, promotion and increase I’m looking for truly God’s will for my life? Am I clamoring for something that is simply not God’s will for me?  I’m not talking about salvation, healing or deliverance. All those are given freely to us under the terms of the New Covenant. I’m talking about position for ministry and influence. Are you craving a position that God is calling you to, or are you looking for a promotion that will validate your life? Do you think you are genuinely qualified, or is it pride driving you to be seen? If you are looking for promotion or a position to validate your life, you will be very disappointed when God doesn’t give it to you. Allow God to bring the validation your heart needs for peace.

2.If this IS truly God’s will for me, is there something in my character or my personal life that is keeping me from being promoted? This is huge. We have all seen people who were promoted before they were mature enough to handle the pressure at that level. Your gift will always make room for you and bring you before great men (Prov.18:16). The road of life is littered with people who could have been, should have been, would have been; but now they are a has been. They never allowed the Word to transform their lives in a way that would create in themselves the character needed of a true Spirit Filled leader. And when the pressure was on, they cracked; exploded, or failed and the new wine of the Spirit or anointing they were carrying was lost. All because of a lack of character.

3.Is it really God’s timing for me to have that kind of responsibility? In Acts 1:7, Jesus plainly told His disciples there are something’s God will not reveal to us because it is not time to be revealed. Some things He will not reveal to us until we get to heaven. And then it’s very possible He won’t reveal some things to us even then. What He does reveal to us, we are responsible for. Are you being faithful to the call and His plan at this level? To whom much is given, much is required. By God and by man. Being faithful in small matters positions you with God to be able to handle greater responsibility. If you want to go up professionally, you must grow up personally and spiritually.

Be faithful and content where you are, on the way to where you are going. John the Baptist said it best:

“A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.”
