The Levi Company

Once again I am stuck in my devotional reading in Deuteronomy. At least I have made it to Chapter 10!

In Chapter 10, Moses is commanded to cut two more tablets of stone to replace the two tablets that were shattered when he came down the mountain the first time due to the sin of the Israelites and the golden calf. He replaces them, goes up the mountain, God once again writes on the tablets with His own finger the same commandments He gave Moses at the beginning.

Moses returns, places the tablets in the Ark, then the children of Israel move on. All these places the children of Israel came to represent things in the process of God that I don’t have time to talk about in this venue. But I do feel another sermon coming on…

Verse 8 brings us to the separation of the tribe of Levi. Verse 8 tells us plainly the Lord did the separation.

There is an old saying “everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die…” Many want to be used by God, but when God begins to separate us, we balk, rebel, even some turn away from God completely because the separation from friends, family and the pleasures this world offers just become too much.

God is calling out a Levitical Company! People who will be separated unto God to carry His Glory; to stand before the Lord and to bless in His Name.

When this separation begins to take place the first thing you will here from people are “…so you just think you are better than me and everyone else?”

No. Jesus said it best: to whom much is given, much is required. To carry the Glory of God (which is symbolozed by the Ark) involves a separation not many are willing to endure. Not everybody was allowed to touch the Ark in these days. One guy did one time just trying to keep the Ark from falling off a wagon and died because of it.

This is a HOLY calling! A RIGHTEOUS calling! A SACRED calling!

This is the clincher: the only reward the Levites got was this: the LORD would be his inheritance.

No land. No cars. No jet airplanes. Not a lot of recognition; Aaron gets that because he gets to go into the Holy of Holies once a year. But without the Levites continually carrying the Ark, standing before the Lord singing, praying and blessing His Name and speaking in His Name, Aaron would not be able to do what he was called to do. No fame. No spotlight. No pat on the back. No 50 year pin. No plaque of recognition of accomplishments.

God is calling out a Levitical Company. But it will only fall to those who are willing for the Lord to be the only inheritance you get.

I have watched families who have fought and sued one another over land, money and possessions left by dead parents and relatives. Sad, but it happens everyday because of the greed that fills people’s heart over “stuff”.

Are you willing for the Lord to be the only inheritance you get?
