Election Day Thoughts 2012

My heart is grieved but grateful this morning. I love the United States. I love what we stand for…the land of the free and the home of the brave. Every time I land in Atlanta from an international trip I am reminded why I love this country so. We are still the only country in the world people are trying to sneak into and not sneak out of!

My heart is grieved because of the culture of corruption I see in almost every facet of our society. It’s obvious corruption is in the political arena, the economic arena and yes, corruption, deceit, selfishness is in the church also. I have never witnessed so many people (preachers included) willing to lie, cheat and steal just to get power and money. The love of money and power truly is the root of all evil.

I read a prophetic word on yesterday that touched and encouraged me. God is not so much interested or concerned on who is elected today as much as He is interested in what our response will be on Wednesday, the day after the election.

No matter who is elected President today, half of the country is going to be angry and upset. The losing side will never accept the other as a leader. A nation divided against itself can never stand. The spirit of division that is seizing the country has infected the Church of Jesus in America also. Our focus and attention for the last 30 years has been on political parties being the answer to our problems, and all we have received is war, debt, and a divided people. We don’t need a Republican agenda or a Democratic agenda, we need an agenda of humility and repentance.

While I am grieved and concerned on one hand, in reality, I am greatly encouraged. God has this unique ability to make treasure out of trash. Bring diamonds out of coal; to bring something good out of something bad.

But do we really want it? Do we really want the best God has, or are we content to keep worshipping the works of our own hands?

People are blaming God for the problems America is facing, but didn’t we see people boo the mention of God at a political event? How can God work in a country that has made it clear the only time we want God involved in our lives is on Sunday mornings between 11am & 12 noon? And then only when we feel like it or don’t have something better going on.

I choose this day that whoever wins this election, I will pray for the leader in accordance with God’s Word. I will realize and hold fast to the truth, a man is not the answer to man’s problems. The answer to our problems will come through the Church of Jesus as we obey His Word:

13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. 2 Chronicles 7:13,14 NIV
